Elements and Performance Criteria

1. Prepare for jointing metallic conductor cable for access network
   • Prepare for given work according to relevant legislation, codes, regulations and standards
   • Arrange access to site according to required procedure
   • Inform appropriate personnel ofexisting and potential hazards on worksite
   • Review siteplans and documentation
   • Select cable type and appropriate connectors for cable joint
   • Set uptools and equipment, and materialsrequired for safe work practice
   • Obtain information on location of other services from relevant authorities
2. Joint metallic conductor cable for access network
   • Joint metallic cable following work health and safety (WHS) and environmental requirements
   • Perform relevant cable tests to ensure joint complies with site specifications, manufacturer’s specifications, and relevant legislation, codes, regulations and standards
   • Rectify any cable faults
   • Record cable tests and any modifications required
   • Label and tag cable joint according to enterprise guidelines and industry practice
3. Protect and alarm cable
   • Pressurise cable and check for any leakage
   • Reconnect alarms, if applicable, according to enterprise guidelines
   • Remove waste and debris from worksite and dispose of according to environmental requirements to maintain safe worksite conditions
4. Complete records and clean up site
   • Complete required records including alterations and notify client
   • Reinstate site according to client and company requirements
   • Present all records to appropriate personnel and obtain sign off

Performance Evidence

Evidence of the ability to:

joint cable with appropriate connectors and according to specifications

perform relevant cable tests to comply with site specifications and industry standards

rectify any cable faults

apply work health and safety (WHS) requirements and work practices associated with the jointing of metallic cable, including documentation.

Note: If a specific volume or frequency is not stated, then evidence must be provided at least once.

To complete the unit requirements safely and effectively, the individual must:

identify Australian Communications and Media Authority (ACMA) competency requirements for Telecommunications Cabling Provider Rules

describe the features and operating requirements of test equipment

describe the information required to operate equipment according to a test specification

identify legislation, codes of practice and other formal agreements that impact on the work activity

identify the manufacturer’s requirements for safe operation of equipment

discuss safety precautions when working with cables

identify specific WHS requirements relating to the activity and site conditions

describe test methods and performance requirements

identify typical issues and challenges that occur on site.
